Diode Connection in Circuit Tripping Path

12/04/2009 4:25 PM

I have noticed that when a single contact from a protection relay is used to fire into both a trip relay and an indication relay, a diode is always included in the tripping path, can anyone please explain the theory behind the diodes

Is it a diode installed across the coil terminal on DC system? If it is OK, the diode function is to circulate a current from the the dc coil due to a high voltage occured during switching off. Without this diode it may disturb electronic equipment being operated due to spike voltage during de-energizing coil.

Sorry if it is not related to this subject.
