Dead Tank and Live Tank Circuit Breakers

12/04/2009 4:31 PM

Dear All

What is a Dead tank and Live tank circuit breaker. I have read that a live tank one has the contacts housing at live voltage whilst the dead one has the contacts housing grounded. For a dead tank i appear to understand and visualise what that means but for a live tank am lost, can someone really explain to me what that means in real life.

The dead tank, where the interrupting elements were enclosed in a grounded metal tank, and the line and bus conductors entered the interrupting chamber through entrance bushings. In each bushing can be provided with the CT respectively.

The live tank, the breaker interrupters are mounted in a container at line potential and insulated from ground potential by porceilain insulating column.

The major advantage of the live tank is its lower cost, especially at the higher, but the disadvantage is required externally mounted current transformer.

Please read "Circuit Interruption Theory and Techniques, edited by Thomas E Browne, Jr, Marcel Dekker" for detail.
