High Speed, Reciprocating Transfer Box

12/07/2009 2:24 PM

I have a group of ME students from a local university working on a machine project for me and I need some information. The machine will needle a mat, much like a sewing machine would but with a group of needles instead. This thing needs to needle at a speed of from 500 to 1800 strokes per minute and at about 30 lbs of force. I would like to know what the actuator, that would turn a motors rotating action into the reciprocating action of the needles, might be called. And if you know of any type of a transfer box like this, I could sure use the help in finding one. Additionally, if anyone can think of a current machine that punches at that speed, that might help me work out how to find the components I need. I thank you in advance.

In general, a mechanical device that transfers rotary motion into intermittent linear motion is a cam. The details of frequency, duration and distance of travel are simply design features of the specific cam you would require.

Does that give you enough to get started?

Just modify a higher powered Sawsall or other reciprocating power saw or similar tool. They are variable speed and capable of well over 30 pounds of stroke force and work in the speed ranges you need.

How about an ordinary crank (as found in 'most any piston engine/sewing machine)?

Is that 30lbf per needle, or total?

Thanks for all of the good comments and questions. I got busy and it is so stinking cold here now that I have been otherwise attentive. The needles are all in a block and move together and they do not sew. They have barbed ends and push fibers into the lower parts of the mat that we are working on, thus the high force. The total force needed is just under 30 lbs. The very first thing we thought of was using a reciprocating saw (Sawzall) but we need to go a little faster and wanted something a little more proper for the students to tackle. They are getting some credit for this. I have a local power transfer sales rep looking for some information for me and I have already designed a rough prototype we will consider. I am also going to be looking at the possibility of modifying a sewing machine to accomplish this.

Again, thanks so far, for all your comments.
