Durable Red Plastic Substrate

12/07/2009 11:44 PM

G'day gents,

I am looking for a UV stable all weather durable RED coloured mouldable plastic.

Red is a colour which is very difficult to maintain without fading under the harsh Ozzy sun, I am hoping to find a substrate which will not deteriorate for at least 10 years, it will be situated outside open to the elements, in a desert environment, facing extreme temperatures at both ends of the scale.

I will need to be able to print on the substrate as well as drill & cut, possibly route to shape.

All suggestions welcome.

Take a look at silicone rubber. Red is a common color for this material. You didn't mention how hard it needs to be and that could be a problem. Other than that potential problem I think it meets your requirements.

Iron Oxide is the best red pigment for this application. You can consider UV stabilised iron oxide filled polypropylene.

Generally organic pigments will fade in direct sunlight.

I wonder...don't they have UV-stablized polycarbonate in opaque red?

Or maybe you could mold a clear UV-stabilized polycarbonate shell to fit over the red (whatever) underneath. The top layer might protect the bottom one pretty well.

Turquoise blue coloured PVC material can be tried. You can check it under high wattage U.V testing source and confirm.

I have done Fadometer testing and outdoor testing on a number of materials and colorant. UV inhibitor are expensive and I have used them only to supplement fade resistance. The summary is that PP with heavy metal colorant Cd and Pb will not fade at the ten year accelarated fadometer test. I have found nothing short of heavy metals that will with stand the level of exposure. I have also complete leaching tests for the toy industry with good results
