Galvanized Pipe as Heat Circulator

12/11/2009 11:20 AM

Any problem with using galvanized pipe as a heat circulator for my fireplace? I would place the pipe vertically in front of the fireplace leaning against the mantle, not in the fire. I'm just trying to capture as much heat as possible until my HVAC is repaired, hopefully this evening. The pipe would heat, causing convection, pull cool air from the floor and exhaust warm air about 65" above the floor.

Thanks,

Don

Just as long as the pipe does not get hot enough to burn the galvanizing off. Zinc Oxide fumes can be very hazardous if breathed in.

I'd about avoid galvanized pipe for most anything, except maybe hitting people over the head.

Ozzb is very right that the fumes are hazardous, for I have personal experience of them when someone cut into galvanized pipes below myself and a workmate with a cutting torch while we were working on scrapping a ship.

Thanks guys. The pipe is about 18" from the fire. It's getting just hot enough where I can still put my hand on the hottest area for a few seconds.

The way you are using it I cannot see a problem, but black steel pipe would work better if you have some.

Thanks Garth. It worked fine and I got the heater fixed. I'll probably put something together with some black pipe later after I tackle a bunch of honey-do's.
