2004 GMC Envoy - Problem Filling the Gas Tank

12/11/2009 8:46 PM

Ok all you GMC owners,

Whenever I try to fill the gas tank, the pump starts cutting off after only about 1/4 full. The GMC dealer said that the hose going down from the cap to the tank was designed to be too small. He replaced it with a new hose which of course is the same size. It is a huge hassle when trying to fill the tank. He also mentioned some type of a canister filter that could go on, but would cause a check engine light to be on all the time. Of course, GM is doing nothing which is one reason they are going to dissapear soon. Does anyone have any ideas or know of the same issue that was actually fixed by a dealer or repair shop?

Run the nozzle at the slowest notch. The dispenser tube has a very small hole in the sidewall of the tube which must be open to allow fuel to flow, in cold temperatures this hole can become clogged with ice. Try different nozzles or fueling stations.

Have your mechanic check your vapour purge valve,, it's located by near the charcoal canister back by the gas tank. Mine plugged, kept pressure in the tank and forced the roll over valve to stay closed,, I'd only get a litre or two in at a time..

Baxterm's thread looks real good. GM Bulletin 04-06-04-003a addresses your problem. It says to use fill pipe 88983256 or 15131043, which are better than stock, and lower hose 15131046 which has a check valve. That's probably the rollover valve Baxterm is mentioning. Check your receipts to see if any of these parts have already been put on your vehicle. It's only supposed to take half an hour to put these parts on, by the book.

Like the other poster said, let the nozzle breathe, back it out of the hole, or change it's position. If that little hole gets gas, it'll shut off the flow.

Exactly Mike, the rollover valve is supposed to prevent gas from running out of the tank in the event the vehicle ends up upside down, excess pressure in the tank will keep it from opening. The purge valve on some GMs seems to be positioned so as to pick up lots of road grime and get clogged. It's supposed to purge the tank pressure when the ignition is turned of, so you can fill the tank

Cheers

Have you always had this problem?

I had a simuliar problem with my mustang. it would keep kicking the gas pump nozzle off. Found out that the roll over flapper valve was tuck in the half open or less. But when I removed it, it seemed to work fine. It was a plastic cylinder with a plastic disc in the middle. (flapper valve) I tried to re install it & still had the same problem. So I just left it off & it worked great.

It could also be that the vent coming out off the gas neck is plugged. Do you have the same filling problem if you slow the rate at which you fill the tank with the filler nozzle? If you left the truck sitting for a long time a spider could have built a nest in the vent tube... You d have to drop the tank, & blow it out with an air compressor.

Good Luck, John

All previous posts are possible fixes. But i thought i should mention this. I have more experience with chrysler vehicles and have seen this same issue. What i have found sometimes is the vent tube from the tank to the top of the filler neck is pluged. this doesn't allow the tank to vent air when filling. causing fuel to gurgle down the filler tube and shuts off the pump. Air needs to exit the tank as fast as the fuel goes in. check the small tube running beside the large filler tube for blockages. i have found cob webs inside. clearing it seemed to fix it.

Hi CMMSDON,

I had this problem just one time.

I found running the flow slightly slower works.

Also, do not put the full pump spout and flange against the tank. Leave it out a few inches and see what happens. Both methods helped me.

Take care and good driving!

I have had this problem on more than one car and both of these solutions have worked for me. Especially not putting the pump spout so far into the tank.

I had a 49 Dodge pickup that was a slow filler. I just lived with it. It sounds like you have a possible solution.

Thanks Everyone. I do try filling it realy slow, and at some stations, that doesn't work either. I am going to take the post with the part numbers to to delaer and have them try that. I was told that I'm obviously not the only owner complaining. This dealship may not have read the service bulletin since they used the same parts. as the original parts. Thanks to everyone who replied.
