Generator Sets - Comparing Efficiencies

12/13/2009 1:02 PM

Hi! to all members. Anybody here can give me some advice which brand of Diesel Driven Generator for a 3 phase, 1.+ MW capacity either 440 volts or 13,800 volts.

We are planning to purchase 6 units of 1.+ MW capacity Generator. At present we received 3 offers with some big price descripancy. The brans we to select are KOHLER (USA) with Mitsubisi Disel Engine. THe other brand is Cummens and the 3rd one is MItsubishi all are disel engine drive. Is anyone can recommend to me which one is better in terms of effciency and fuel economy. Any Diesel Fuel is secondary issue because we are here base in Saudi Arabia.

Any reccomendation/comments will be highly appreciated.

My best regards

Not all manufacturers are going to give you reproducible efficiency information. You generally will not get adequate reliability information from the manufacturers. A very, very important question is, does the supplier maintain adequate support facilities (i.e., stocking repair parts, adequate service department to support warranty repair calls, factory-trained mechanics/electricians)? Does the supplier have sufficient presence in the local market to insure that you will be able to get parts/service when required?

One issue I have encountered with Kohler in the local market (Panama) is that they sell a variety of units with different power plants, which means not all Kohler generators of the same specification are equal. Parts are not generally interchangeable even between engines of supposedly the same manufacturer (my experience does not extend to the Kohler/Mitsubishi combination). Locally, Cummins parts are difficult to come by.

Here in Panama, I would not consider recommending anything other than Caterpillar, although Caterpillar quality is not what it used to be. But Caterpillar still maintains an outstanding support infrastructure locally, and parts are generally interchangeable between different generations of machines of similar specifications. However, if Caterpillar is not well-represented locally, I would hesitate to recommend them...

I have used mitsubishi and is very reliable and efficient.

I have used Caterpillar which is reliable and efficient and am using it presently.

I have also used others like cummins, perkins, blackstone,Doyce,if i spell it right.

They are all good, but personally i would recommend to u,Carterpillar and or Mitsubishi which are rugged to my liking.Though i cant talk of their fuel economy. Also, some people prefer cummins and say it is also rugged in performance too.
