Compatible Metals?

12/14/2009 10:27 PM

my question is:

Is it possible to harden a material 904L which was build up on a 4140 metal? Will 904L material get strenght compatible to 4140?

Thank you

What conditions have lead you to this question?

What conditions need be present to increase or maintain integrity of hardness within the 4140?

What conditions need occur to produce hardness of L904?

Who's homework is this?

Good Day,

I asked this question in getting more information due to repair being made in one small gearbox for our limitorque actuator.

Worn out gear lead us to repair the gear portions due to unavailablity of spare parts.

Build up was done on the teeth portion after machining the worn out teeth and build up by 904L by teg welding process.

I knew that in term of harness and tensile strenght, these two alloy are slightly different.

Thank you for the comment.

Have a nice day too

Was the 4140 heated to cherry red before during and after the build up was performed?
