Venturi Extraction System

As part of a pilot plant I want to build a venturi extraction system to extract hot gasses from afterburners (the gasses are too hot to use a conventional fan). I am a chemist and lack the knowledge to design the system so that I get it right first time. Can anyone help with the key points and dimensions?

I am hoping to use concentric ductwork with materials "off the shelf". The outer duct being 610 mm and the inner duct 450 mm arranged so that when high velocity air is blown through the inner duct low pressure is formed below the venturi tip sucking air into the 610 ducting from a side arm attached to hoods over the afterburners. Can anyone Help?

The basic principals of this system are outlined in Perry's Chemical Engineers Handbook if you can get your hands on a copy (see 5-13, section 5, page 13). This will give you the relationships between flow, pressure, and physical dimensions of the system, but will not give you much on the materials requirements.

I think you are going to need someone with experience in vacuum systems to design this for you. A chemical engineer or maybe a mechanical engineer would be good. Your materials selection is going to be critical to prevent corrosion and erosion issues.

Perry's is very technical and detailed. I also have several textbooks on Fluid Mechanics with similar information, maybe you could look for something along those lines?

Hi Carbon Man,

I had one of these built as an experiment. It's small (the throat is only an inch) and it works real well. The blue portion is a cavity where compressed air is injected into. The small slit allows the air to enter the throat and pulls air through it. It was intended to cool a wheel that was in contact with a hot cylinder (can't go into too much detail about that). Other guys were also thinking venturi but I thought I could get rid of the inner pipe this way.

There's just one catch. I'm not so sure if it will work at the size that you're requiring. Shouldn't be difficult to duplicate though. I don't think it has to look the same way. Just use the same principle.

carbon man, what you need is an air amplier. It's off the shelf and if required, you can make it out of titanium if you want. It's usually available in aluminum or stainless steel.

Vulcan was probably saying the same thing.

This looks like a very interesting device, but are you sure that it will provide enough air flow for an extraction system? If it does it could be the answer to my problem.

you're welcome Chris, actually the air amplifier is easily scalable, material to withstand op. temp. isn't an issue either. it even used to move materials too! Basically, its used to exhaust fumes and other gases, or even to ventilate spaces.

This does not answer my original question, but does provide a possible solution to my problem, same thing really!!!.

I have located a number of suppliers of air amplifiers here in the U.K. and they have provided me with the technical info.

I start my vacation next week, so I will pick up the project on my return and will let you know the outcome. I will follow the progress of the VTOL project with interest.
