What is the condition in which you have procured the EN24?

IN HT condition it is perfectly machinable.

Some years ago when I ran a machine shop we used to make pump shafts from EN24 which was required to be in X condition. Therefore we used to buy Double Annealed EN24 and carry out most of the machining operations, have it heat treated and then carry out a final grinding op.

Having said that it was quite easy to machine when purchased in T condition (in fact my machinists had more trouble machining M/S or EN1A) and I suspect that modern carbides would allow machining of the higher conditions. As with any Heat treated material you can expect it to move with the relief of stresses as you machine it.

Sure. Try a spheroidizing anneal: heat to 1380 F, hold, cool fast to 1300 F, hold, then cool to 1050 F at a rate not to exceed 5 F/hour. Or heat to 1380 F, cool rapidly to 1200 F and hold for 12 hours.
