Testing strips

01/16/2007 5:00 PM

I work for the engineering section of a college. We offer a strength of materials class in which we do destructive testing of various metals, alloys and synthetics, such as aluminum, copper, acrylics and many others , to study under microscope the effects and limitations of materials under tension and stress. Most recently we have been at a loss to find a source for test strips made of various materials. I understand from experience in industry that materials testing is done by a company to verify the quality and consistency of material batches and therefore they make up their own strips. However being a college lacking the infrastructure and machinery of companies this is not an option for us. We were wondering is their a source for test strips that can be made from a simple sketch in various materials?

just go to a local machine shop and tell them you want test stri[s and give them the metal or other material you want and how long.

easy way is to cut it from some type of bar stock of standard size = cheaper.

where did you get them before?

I remember that class as one of my favorite university courses. Stength of materials and the understanding thereof has real world practical value. It came in handy while Designing and testing umbilicals and disconnects for the Saturn V quick disconnect with reconnect capability for Liquid Oxygen lines. Later in boiler tube design, testing, and repair it would have been my priviledge to share multiple material samples for testing and analysis. Unfortunately the power industry has no qualified testing source for routine boiler tube material testing. As a certified ASME welding inspector, we had the handicap of trusting the material supplied complied with material specifications.

Please contact the plant engineer at the nearest electric power generating plant including the power facility at the resident university. Agree to test any samples submitted. In exchange power plant engineering can arrange to supply any material samples needed by the university. Allow students to interface with power plant engineering staff and exchange material samples and technical information. Some students may choose the plant co-op plan for pay or for the experience gained. Hiring companies usually credit up to 2 years experience when hiring students with co-op experience.

A co-op student recently evaluated the sulfur dioxide injection system for the precipitator, identified reasons the system failed to perform properly, recommended fixes, and returned the following semester to witness a fully functional system. Plant engineering and management personnel trusted the supplier, questioned the maintenance personnel, and failed to realize the technical reasons for routine failure of the system. The uninhibited co-op engineering student readily identified that the physical properties of sulfur would not flow properly with the initial system design. Maintenance personnel had wrestled with the initial system for over ten years.

No need to invent the wheel...

Go-To: ASTM International, Metals test methods and analytical procedures, or the same for Plastics or whatever material you need to test. There you can also obtain test strips standards to make them yourself or purchase. Or you can google "Instron Corp." there you will find a wealth of information.

Good luck

Wangito.

when I first started college, I was working in the University as a work-study student. I remember I have to use a lathe to "cut up" some cast iron chips for use in the Mechanical Engineering class for the strength and material. Your post bought back memory.
