How Much Energy Gets Saved?

12/16/2009 10:17 AM

Hi guys, My computer has a very green "dynamic easy saving" capability, that features heavily in their advertising. With this turned on, I've measured that the average saving is 16 W. First question: does this mean that every hour I am saving 0.016 KWh? Second question: given that I use my computer roughly 1,000 hours a year, does this mean that the total savings for the year will be 16 KWh ~ $1.60 per year? Because if I'm saving $1.60 a year, I don't know what the fuss is about, really. It doesn't seem to me like I'm saving either the planet or my bank account. Unless you guys think I got my numbers wrong. Thanks in advance for your replies J.

You got the numbers right.

Cleaning the rear fins and door seal of your refrigerator would save you more money.

<...saving 0.016 KWh?...>

No. The saving is 16W, or .016kW.

Correct.

<...Because....saving $1.60 a year.......what the fuss is about, really....>

Multiply that by oh, say, 75 million computer users, and re-evaluate, perhaps?

Most computers come with a 300 to 600 power supply but this does not mean it draws that much current. I am sure the computer actually uses less. The big draw is with the CRT monitor and that has its own separate power supply. I now use a LED monitor, which gives me a much better viewing screen and draws a ton less power. For a real savings, one can get a laptop which is battery powered but does need recharging. I don;t like the keyboard of a laptop so I stay with my desktop machine. In addition, I turn off my machine at night and when I leave the house, for security reasons. Oh, and for security reasons, I use Linux rather than Microsoft. I think your biggest home electric savings will come from low wattage lighting and energy star appliances and unplugging things like chargers, appliances, and TV's when not in use.

Thanks for your replies guys. I'm glad in a way that I got the concept right, although definitely not very impressed with the savings I'm making. I think I'll try insulating the roof and lowering the thermostat by 1 C instead :-) regards J.

Your figures sound right.

Congratulations on finding a new computer that uses less power than older models. My computer that I bought 4 months ago came with a 1000W power supply.

I suppose that when all of the oil is gone from the tar sands, we can start running our power plants on baby seals.

Large power supply computers are generally used by gamers. Since my computer is for work, I get by wiht only a 450 watt power supply. The only game I play is pysol once in a while when I need some time to waste.

You can clean you're refrigerator coils AND insulate you're roof AND use energy saving setting on your computers AND ...

Add it up and multiply by millions of homes. Certainly worth the trouble.

Some equipments use more power upon start up than in continuous running then add the increased costs of manufacturering and of replacement due frequent restarts.

You'd fair well applying insulated panels to windows at night....
