Mercedes C220 CDI - Heater Blower is Kaput

12/16/2009 1:30 PM

Hi All

Does anyone have any ideas on where the heater blower is located on a Mercedes C220 cdi - year 2000 and how easy is it replace. Are there any precautions I need to take like clips snapping, as it is very cold at the moment.

Also any suggestions on a manual other than Haynes, which is not that great for this model as it concentrates mainly on the older petrol cars.

I have looked on the net but all it seem to bring up is junk and links more websites which have the same crap. A PDF manual/CD would be ideal.

Thanks in advance

The only manual better than Haynes is the factory one, but you might want to see if anyone has a Chilton Manual for your car. Chilton is often used in place of the factory book in North America and may be available on line or on ebay. A factory one may be as well.

As for where the blower motor is; if I remember correctly it is in the middle of the dash inside the airbox and is not easy to get out. Without looking it up I suspect the fast way is to start taking things apart at the gear shift and work your way forward. When you get to the blower motor, stop.

Benz blower motors have always been a pain to change

Good luck

Thanks for the support.

I was tempted to take it apart but, everything on this car is electric and that means a lot of switches to pull apart. I remember the noise prior to the blower motor stopping, which was from under the glove box (left hand side of the car - you guys have the steering wheel on the wrong side ;)) we have the steering on the right hand side).

I am hoping the motor is under the glove box. Its difficult at the moment as temps are around 0 degrees and everything is too cold to work on.

Also we had 3 inches of snow last few days and everything has stopped - other countries seem to manage but not here unfortunately.

Hence I am a bit reluctant to start if I can't finish the job. Manual or some one with experience would have helped gauge how long it would take and how much trouble it would cause.

If you can possibly do so, find yourself a Bentley manual for the car. A website promises free downloads of same at http://www.otocar.info/mercedes-benz-c-class-w202-service-manual-1994-2000-pdf-manual.html, but I have not tried actually obtaining one that way. I used Google, with seed parameters "Bentley manual" Mercedes C220 CDI 2000. I've owned/maintained/repaired numerous VWs, and buy the Bentley for each; I've also used ones for Audi & Porsche. Usually, they ARE the factory manuals. But that may not be so here; the same search yielded i.a., http://www.mercedesmanuals.com/Mercedes_Benz_Service_Repair_Manuals_2000_Up_s/6.htm. Amazon offers the Bentley, but read the comment from "Couch Potato" on April 30, 2009: http://www.amazon.com/Mercedes-benz-C-class-Service-Manual-Kompressor/dp/0837615720.

Hi Ron

Tried the PDF links but they all send you round in circles.

I had a look at the Bentley manual on amazon was tempted to buy it but since the original post it snowed here and some one scraped the side of my car which may become a right-off, in which case spending that much on a manual may not be worth while unless the insurance company decides otherwise or I buy same model again.

But if you do find PDF please let me know.

thanks

"...send you round in circles" was pretty much why I noted that the sites PROMISED downloads, and that I had not tried the links. I've run into similar issues before, so sort of expected that there could be problems. No time available for me to go searching further at present - sorry.

Around here, some local libraries have a selection of automotive manuals (usually a VERY limited selection), but once in a while I've been lucky. You may want to look into that resource [and here, I'd check for an interlibrary loan, which would give me access to books at places all around my state, not just the local system, greatly increasing the chance of finding what I need].

Sorry to read about the damage done to your car. We've got snow here, about a foot on the ground at home (300 mm), and roads were treacherous this morning. Temperature just below freezing, and will rise in time to add freezing rain over the mess, then plunge again down near our zero ( ~ -17 or -18 C).
