2007 Hyundai - Transmission Problem

12/17/2009 3:43 PM

My 2007 Hyundai does this thing - at highway speed - sometimes when passing gear engages, it sounds like the transmission goes into neutral and there is a delay for a couple of seconds before there is a tremendous bang as the gears engage. The car has 82k miles on it now, but it has done it since I got it with 7900mi 2 years ago. The preponderance of the driving is highway.

I am confused about why it would not happen all the time.

Any suggestion as to what's up?

I've only known this to happen when the transmission oil is low, but after two years presumably you will have had a service done which should have checked that? I once blew a gasket on a transmission and it emptied out over about 10 mins. It went from the condition you describe (intermittent neutral...bang!) to happening every gear change, then on to no engagement whatever - just whizzing about in neutral.

Anyway - I'm no mechanic, but if this helps, it helps!

Good luck.

Hyundai vehicles normally have a 100k mile drive train warranty from the manufacturer. That warranty should be transferrable between owners. I would say get it into a dealership and have it looked at.
