Is it an Ion Exchange water softener( do you have to feed it salt?) Typically calcium and magnesium ions that make up "hard water" are attracted to a medium, such as tiny plastic grains, that have a positive charge, thus removing them from the water flowing through the softener. Periodically the softener regenerates, exchanging the calcium and magnesium for the sodium and flushing it all down the drain to begin the process all over again.
