Explosive rivets

12/25/2009 1:33 PM

I used them about 50+ years ago for light aircraft construction. Does anyone still use them today for any application? I did a search and couldn't find anyone who supplies them.

Helicopter winches frequently have explosive attach bolts, but I had never run into rivets personally.

Explosive rivets must have been politically incorrect. They were redesigned and they are now called "pop" rivets.

the exploding rivets you speak of had a tiny explosive charge in the head you set off with a specially shaped soldering iron. They worked well and are still used. They differ from pop brand rivets, which are mechanical

http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=rivet+%2B%22exploding+head%22&aq=f&aqi=&oq=rivet+%2B%22exploding+head%22&fp=cbc2f75bf9d43a8f

The explosion creates an expanded mass of metal. There is no hollow shaft = weak, as in pop rivets.

Aircraft is the place most used as they have a true smooth surface and are good for blind holes uses/.

A lot pf links use the term exploding incorrectly to describe pop rivets

Quite correct aurizon. I still have a small box of assorted rivets which work quite well with a big heavy duty soldering iron, but am not into building planes so have not had many uses for them.

The "exploding head" rivet as described in the link, is not the same thing as an "explosive rivet". The former works like a drywall anchor and doesn't contain any explosive charge.

Hi ronseto,

Hope your holiday is going well?

Did you check out the link to Exploding rivets in post #4? It would be interesting to know if it is the correct type or not. I can still see a need for them now though?

Enjoy the rest of your holidays, Good luck.

Detective:- "A sad and all too frequent story these days, she and her family were assassinated by a popcorn bomb".

Sargent:- "A popcorn bomb"?

Detective:- " Yes, genetically bred to pop all at once"

Re: Explosive rivets

As I stated previously, I used them a while back. I just thought about them the other day and wondered if anyone still used them, or if they were even manufactured anymore. They were the original blind rivet and the answer to riveting aluminum panels in inaccessible areas in aircraft construction. Their drawback was the expanded end of the rivet couldn't be inspected for correct upset and the residue from the explosion was corrosive to metals. The "POP" rivet finally replaced the explosive rivet.

Re: Explosive rivets

I think it lives on, with improved explosives that corrode less after the fact. They might even be able to make a contained release that fattens the stem but does not break it??
