3 or 5 phase?

I'm building my first air gap wind turbine generator and have seen two coil winding/ wiring diagrams for the same type of machine.

The first is a nine coil three phase system, the other is a ten coil five phase system.

Both sources claim their system is more efficient and practical.

Does anyone have any insight / suggestions?

What do you intend to use it for? On-grid generation of AC power or Off-grid generation of DC? If Off-grid DC generation, where you are going to rectify to DC, then the 5 phase would be more efficient. If you plan on doing On-grid generation of AC, then 5 phase would be totally impractical because you would need to rectify, then invert as 3 phase, which would incur a lot of losses.

Wind turbines generated current has a variable frequency at the generator level if the turbine has not a speed regulation. I very much doubt that his design has such a frequency stabilizer so that in any case he has to go through the DC-AC phase even if only for his internal supply. The grid has a tight frequency tolerance so that in fact it is no relevant the number of phases for the generator only the delivered current has to be sychron in phase with the grid.

So your saying I need to go from AC to DC to AC so the frequency is regular?

Do you think tying into the grid will be impractical because of the power loss?

In any country where you want to go Grid-Tie, you will have to go through a Grid-Tie Inverter that is set up to match that particular countries regulations, Voltage, Frequency, Isolation and anti-islanding and approved by the relevant authorities.

All the units of this type I have seen or read about are DC-AC. So you're going to need to regulate your 3 or 5 phase to DC to feed your Inverter.

The Losses aren't that great, considering the input (wind, solar etc) are "Free".
Capturing it is obviously a different issue.

So forget about more efficient, and look at the rated output, batteries (possibly) and the appropriate Grid-Tie Inverter. It doesn't matter if one has an efficiency of 99% and supplies 4.5kW if you need 5kW to run the system and the other system runs at 80% but still provides 5kW which you need.

i guess using 5 phase is better since it is more efficient than using 3 phase, but you have to convert from AC to DC and then back to AC again to get the desired output since the grid is supposed to be the 3 phase system.
