Water Blown Fiber Optic Cable

01/04/2010 4:28 PM

Has anyone used or heard of using water as the prime mover for installing fiber optic or other cable in underground ducts?

Air assisted or manual pulling/ winching is the commonly used methods. I have read about the water method in Northern Europe but I can no longer find it on the net.

You don't mean Polywater, do you?

Say that quickly three times!

I have never heard of using water as a means to install cable in ducts. But here in the Northeast it would not be advisable unless you can later remove the water to eliminate the ducts from breaking when the water freezes.

No, not pulling lube.

This is a unit that is similar to air blown cable installation but uses water as the installation medium, as opposed to air. The fiber optic cable floats on the water and longer installation are possible without mid-assists. This would be advantageous in situations where the conduit has installed poorly with more curves and bends than it should have.

yes, water assist was used after contractor tested means of removing all water. His equipment and personnel have been working in Europe and were going back for another job immediately after. Contractor was from around Syracuse, NY. Contract placed 144and 216 in 1 1/4 duct for miles along interstates.

We recently purchased a PRM-196 from Sherman & Riley. It's manufactured by Plumett which I believe is a Swiss company. This unit is used for blowing micro-fibers (2-12strand) and mini-fibers (24-144strand) in ducts ranging from 5mm to 12mm. I had never heard of using water for fiber placement until we were reading the literature and going over the standard practices of the new unit. There was mention made of using water instead of air in the user booklet.

It's an interesting idea. If you're still looking for more info it may be best to look at the European market. They have been ahead of us for quite a while when it comes to communications cable placement.
