Wireless boost to gaming console in play room advice

01/06/2010 4:08 PM

We have a games room which is some 50 feet from the main wireless router Mircadigital, when my boys are playing Modern Warfare or whatever we occasionally get a break in transmission,is there a device which we could introduce which would boost the signal and reduce interruptions? Many Thanks Martin

Use wires...
Wirelessss is pants unless your house is in an open field with paper walls.
I expect your wireless router also has ports for wires, my speed and reliability increased massively when I dissabled the wireless section (by software control) and used cables instead.
I would say it's less time and cost to put in wires than to spend your life trawling sites and fiddling with software switches and fancy antennae etc.

Although it is cumbersome (for someone from the Ozarks) to try to decode some of the feline terms he uses, Del is right. Hard wire is the only way to go!

The others are right about the wires but you might want to consider an "N" wireless (802.11n). They are supposedly faster, stronger and all that over the "G" models. Over here they make 3 versions labeled good, better and best.

Of course, you need the "N" router and an "N"wireless unit on your computer to get all the speed and power. If you have "G" on a computer, you're only going to get the "G" speed and power on that connection even if the router is an "N".

I'll just mention that signals don't like to go through metal walls or foil covered insulation for that matter. Many people have problems getting a good signal through rock, brick or concrete block walls.

Until they come out with something better "N" is as good as you can get.

Good luck,

Randy

I agree wires are the best and most dependable method though you may like an option: http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-WIFI-Antenna-Reception-Booster/

If you can buy a further WLAN router that has all of the same safety in it WPA2 etc that your present one (hopefully) has and uses, you can install the second router as a WLAN repeater.....

Its a fiddle, took me best part of a day and luckily I had two from the same manufacturer, which helped, but should be not necessary.....

We have a 3 storey house and the WLAN was in the basement and my daughter is on the top floor, now she can work there perfectly after I placed the repeater in our lounge of the ground floor.....

Just make sure that the router you buy has a repeater possibility and has the latest safety/security.....anything less leaves your WLAN open to hackers as WEP has been long ago Hacked.....WPA2 is the minimum for BOTH Routers....

2.4 GHz powered repeaters can be had relatively cheap. Just find an available outlet midway between the two areas and try to place it relatively high. I used one in a 4 story Bed & Breakfast that worked fairly well, though there were some weak/dead spots depending on what the signal needed to go through (appliances, furnaces, other large metal objects).

If your problem is not really signal strength but occasional dropouts a repeater will probably not fix it. Make sure you don't have any other 2.4GHz appliances that occasionally go on. 2.4 GHz cordless phones are notorious for causing dropped router connections. I've advised many people to switch to 1.9 GHz router friendly phones because of this problem.

As others have said, running cable is the best solution (although not always the most practical). Cable itself, though, will probably not improve your internet performance. Your ISP is usually your speed throttler, not your modem/router.

If you decide to go the repeater route, check out dd-wrt (google it), it is a rom for many different routers. I had a router die, replaced it, experimented with the rom on the dead one, was able to use it as an access point while in a temporary office. I liked the rom so much, and it was so flexible, I flashed it to my new router at home. dd-wrt roms give you more options on how to set up your routers.

If you really want a wireless repeater I'd suggest you look at Apple's AirPort Express, it is enabled for 802.11n and has a repeater function. http://www.apple.com/ca/airportexpress/ The user interface is quite intuitive, and the speed/reliability are excellent. We currently use them in our home and haven't noticed any lag despite 3 computers and an Xbox360 continuously sucking up the bandwidth. You may also need to consider the possibility that your ISP is throttling your connection, it is a fairly common practice to maintain basic user bandwidths. The solution is typically found in the application of more money for, what the ISP claims is a better connection (Faster, more bandwidth). Happy hunting.
