I have an application where I need to get power to an electric motor that drives an oscillating screen screening pulpwood chips.
The screen is of the type that hangs from four flexible hangers. The oscillating action is imparted to the screen by a rotating pulley with an offset weight, all of which is mounted on the screen. Therefore, the electric motor must be fed power through a flexible power cord that can absorb the screen oscillations. Just to be clear, the oscillations are in the horizontal plane. The oscillations are circular and are about a 2" total motion.
We are having problems with this system in that the power cords only seem to last about 8 months. A quick calculation suggests that the cord is lasting about 110 million cycles.
We had to increase the flow rate over the screen a few years ago and increased the rpm of the offset weight from 284 rpm to 315 rpm. This increased the screening capacity as desired but our problems with the cabling failures began. (Well, actually the drive motors starting falling off, but that was fixed with a better motor mounting system.)
Currently, the cable is suspended over the screen and drops nearly vertically to the motor on the screen. There is 2-3 feet of suspended cable that takes up the motion of the screen.
Can anyone suggest anything that might help this cable live longer? Should we be looking at a longer vertical section of cable to spread the flexing out over more cable? Are there any specialist suppliers in North America who might be able to help us?
