Broadband Computer Wants to Keep Dialing. Help!

01/06/2010 11:49 PM

A friend gave me a Dell Dimension 2350 with XP Professional. He used AOL and a dial up system. I have coxbroadband,a Motorola SB 5120 modem, and a Linksys (cisco) Router WRT 54G model.6. I have uninstalled the AOL and tried to install coxbroadband connected by the ethernat and have tried to install the software and get it to work by USB Ports. Even though I click Broadband for the setting and no dial. Any suggestions please.

I have heard that AOL has made things difficult to make changes. I do not know if this is true or not, but I do not want an antqated system such as AOL near my systems at all.

Any of you IT guys got suggestions please.

hello, Not to be smart. You did use control panel add/remove program to remove aol? Then check and remove any leftover directives and any files associated with aol.

there is also internet options you can go into internet properties box tab connections and select "never dial connections".

Also you could disable the modem in "phones and modem options" under "modem" options select the modem click properties then in "general" at the bottom "device usage" select the "disable" option.

This may help you to get past the aol dialing long enough to get your other software loaded and running. Also if you not needing the modem leave it disable. Its easy enough to re enable if you have a need to use it.

This you may have tried, but I don't know. It's one of the ways I would look at.

But I'm sure some of our knowledgeable crew may have more insight to the problem than what I've suggested here.

good luck

Charles

Did cox BB give an installation disc? Use it if no joy call cox/support and they'll talk you through it or use remote access and fix it for you. They'll also take off the AOL or you can download http://www.pcdecrapifier.com and it will remove all of AOL. I found AOL was very invasive, if a banner say are you sure you want uninstall AOL, yes you do...Go ahead

There are a couple of programs out there like Startup Cop that can help you determine what applications are actually loaded and running on the computer when you turn it on. Have a look to see if there is anything associated with AOL, and disable it. Be careful- do not disable anything you are not sure of- you could cause some problems. Startup Cop and a couple of other applications out there that do the same thing generally give you some information about who wrote the app, when, etc...

Go to Device Manager and Control Panel to remove any AOL network adapters. Then disable any services from AOL.

I think in XP, if you use Internet Explorer, you can go to 'Tools', 'Internet Options', 'Connections' & select 'never dial a connection'. That might stop it.

Hi Gas Man,

And welcome!

In my opinion disabling the modem may not be the right thing to do here. I am not a 'know it all' but when as you did, you give such a short and to the point advice, there should be other advice to follow as to how the OP (Original Poster) can get on-line.

This is not a dig at you personally, just advice to you to try where you can to give a more expansive answer, OK?

Your answer may work if there is an external Modem to rely on, or a combined Modem Router perhaps?

Take care..........

Hi LMoody,

If you have XP, and depending on your Internet Provider the connection may be completely automatic?

You can try as post # 5 suggests. If it works it will save you a lot of problems!

If you know all the details for connections to the web via your modem, and or router, save it!

Try connecting as you usually do but without the router.

You should write or copy all the connection protocols by click all the tabs along the top of the connections dialogue window. Remember you only need a single digit, dot or letter or figure wrong and you will have no success. That is assuming your IP does not connect automatically!

Go to your networks connections and check to see the AOL connection has been deleted. It may be helpful if you never intend to use AOL again for a while, you can search for and delete anything to do with AOL. That gives you a clean slate to start with a new connection and that connection will be channelled through your new IP, not AOL in any way.

If you need to fill in the detail by hand, make sure you have the correct details and then start a brand new connection in the networks connections 'page'.

If this works then double check the settings in your router, as once again, and it does get a little more complicated with a router, but usually a router will keep any setting even if it is disconnected. Do not press the 'reset' button on the back of the modem, as this will return it to 'factory settings' and it will be completely blank of anything to do with you and your personal details.

If you want to check on the router settings go on-line to the router manufacturer and you can click through the 'dialogue' pages as necessary. If you are not sure of something you may have added or altered on your router, write down what it is and where it is and delete that item only. Try and connect to see if it makes any difference. If it does not seem to make any difference, re-enter those details again and try to connect.

It is usually recommended by the makers the all wires leading to your router be removed and the power should be plugged into the router after 30 seconds, and from my memory, connect the web/telephone cable in another 30 seconds, then go on-line and check you have it all set up correctly.

I will not go any further because it may be that post number 5 has already given you the correct answer which may get things working.

Please let us/me know OK?

Thx babybear.

I will keep your instructions open on my laptop and follow them.

I will let you know, maybe later today, how things went. I have another priority today.

I will let you know ASAP how things went.

Hi LMoody,

Connection does seem to be the one thing that for some, depending on the IP you use, sometimes needs to be set up by you or me?

It is also something where, a basic setting to get you connected, can be achieved automatically.

I wish you luck. You have some good advice here from others, especially bwire, Nigh and cwarner7 11.

If you cannot get connected automatically, configuration of the IP setting and router setting must be methodical, and the same each, time as long as you are certain every detail is correct! As in any 'job', making your setting up the same each time means, that once you have it working properly, apart from a quick check, there will probably be nothing wrong with your connections settings, and it (whatever it may be causing the problem at the time) must be something else.

Every IP has minor differences to the way you have to enter your name and your 'user-name'!

Take care.
