Cloud Computing

01/06/2010 11:55 PM

For those of you who may think cloud computing is the wave of the future, I suggest you have a look at the FTC's take on security:

This article references an FTC letter that can be downloaded in *.pdf format.

The concerns I noticed weren't about cloud computing, but what information companies are gathering & what is being done with that information.

There is some concern about access from, the cloud keepers[google], hackers & law enforcement.

A good rule of thumb is to not store any info on a networked computer that you wouldn't share in public

Actually, a good rule of thumb is to not store any info on ANY computer you would not share in public- the Feds can take your computer and use the contents as evidence against you...or a really determined hacker (i.e., Microsoft) can access anything stored on your computer when you put it on line. The cloud just makes this information more easily accessible.

For certain very minor things its nice to have in the cloud but I would never trust all of my information to be left on Google or any other companies servers.

That is why although online data backup services are probably the safest for loss of data, they are definitely not the safest as far as keeping other people out of your data.
