Issue with 2007 Honda Civic windshield wipers

01/07/2010 8:33 AM

Does anyone owning a 2007 Honda Civic EX have problems with the wipers operating correctly. Right now, when I place the wipers in intermittent (short and long time delay), the timing does not work and when the wipers stop, they do not stop in the correct postion. This also occurs when I use the windshield washer function and the manual position (lever cycled to the up position) and when turning off the wipers from either of the continuously on positions (slow and fast). It seems to me that this is an electronic issue and I have gone on some owners websites and cannot seem to find anything about this problem. I am fairly handy and would like to do the work my self if possible. If some one could give me a clue, it would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

You don't seem to have accumulated a lot of useful information specific to your car so I am providing this as general information which may, or may not, be useful.

The last Honda I worked on was a 1979 model but the wiper park function is usually a switch inside the wiper motor assembly. If the wipers run OK but don't work on pulse or stop in all the wrong places, the switch inside the motor that keeps it running until it is in the parking position is not closing.

The reason the pause does not work or the wipers just jump a little each time the cycle starts is that the parking switch is what keeps the motor running until it reaches the end of its cycle and parks.

I would start seriously looking at what it costs to replace the motor and find out if one is available. If I was able to buy one to replace it, then and only then I would take the old one apart to see if I could fix the thing. Usually, it is just a bad connection somewhere in the cable or parking switch. Clean contacts, tighten or re-solder the faulty connection(s) or just pitch the old one and put in the replacement.

If the motor/switch housing is riveted, the rivets can usually be drilled out and replaced with machine screws. I have driven more than one car with repaired wiper, door lock and window motors. Most can be patched with a little ingenuity to working condition for a little labor, grease and spray electric cleaner.

Have FUN!

I go for your answer that either the motor contact plate (inside with wipers), or the live (unswitched) supply to the motor is missing. This is the supply that drives the motor onto the park position when the wiper motor is switched off....

It could be that the ontact/brush is defective inside the motor....

Thanks, I will look into the things that you have outlined. This was more helpful than any of the owner sites.

Again,

Thanks,

A lot of what has been posted is good advice. The last Honda I work one with a windshield wiper issue was a 2005 Civic. The problems were similar to what you describe. The issue was solved by replacing the Multi-Function switch. This is located in the steering column. It might be best to have a dealer or local service shop look at it. Working with the steering column is not as easy as it used to be, now you have to make sure you don't screw up the air bag.

I own a 2007 Honda Civic EX and I have the exact same problem. My father also owns a 2007 Honda Civic EX and he is having the same problem on his car. Weird. I was actually just searching to see if there was some type of recall on this.

As some additional info, this problem presents itself predominatly when it is raining or heavy fog. I have taken the car to the dealership but have not been able to reproduce the problem in front of them. I really do not want to pay the labor fee for them to fish around (close to $45 an hour) and I am afraid of what its going to cost for a new wiper control unit.

I also own a 2007 Civic EX and called the dealer about this exact problem. Of course there hasn't been a recall - only a safety bulletin. So if your car has less than 36,000 miles you can get the wiper motor replaced free of charge. Otherwise, it will likely run you over $200 with parts and labor unless you can do the job yourself.

I have 07 honda civic lx and i had the same problem. I had same problem and seems to happen a lot when its cold or raining. This is covered under standard 3year/36000 miles warranty as well as the extended warranty if you have taken it.

The problem is with Electric motor of the wiper and only solution is to relace it. If your car is still under warranty please go to dealer and fix it asap.

Don't 100% agree. I have the same problem on my 2007 civic. It seems to occur when the wipers have been 'busy' for a few minutes. It MAY be the motor, but may also be the sensor not communicating with the motor. I do, however wish I could fix the damn thing!

I'm having the same issue. They charged me $45 to diagnose the problem and it's going to be a total of $275 to replace the wiper motor.

My 2007 EX sedan has the same symptoms, although usually only in very wet/rainy/damp fog conditions.

When the weather is dry, I do NOT experience the wipers continuously running on the Intermittant or Mist settings, or the wipers "parking" partially up the windshield.

Three trips to two different dealers have not resolved the problem--they cannot seem to replicate the "wet" weather conditions under which my car's problems occur. I plan on having an independent mechanic replace the wiper motor.
