Would You See a Presentation by the Future Physicist from Discovery Channel?

01/08/2010 3:13 PM

Hey all,

First, full disclosure: I am a GlobalSpec employee whose primary responsibility is assisting clients who have content they want you to learn about come up with the best marketing programs we can offer. i.e. I'm a *gulp* sales rep (you're allowed to boo, I won't take it personally ).

That being said, I would be really grateful if you would be willing to share your opinion on something. I'm a techie geek at heart (our whole household is) and I was SO excited to see that Dr. Michio Kaku - the very cool futurist physicist that is in all the Discovery Channel high-tech/futurist shows - will be presenting/speaking at a client's conference in April:

http://esc-sv09.techinsightsevents.com/michio_kaku

I *LOVE* this guy (I admit it may border on a crush lol) and based on some of the people I know in my brick-and-mortar world, suspect many of you might recognize him and like his work too.

So:

1 - would knowing someone like him was presenting make you more likely to attend a conference if you were on the fence before that?

2 - would knowing he was presenting change your mind completely about attending a conference you formerly excluded?

3 - if you would like to go to something like this, but can not/will not, do you mind sharing why?

for example, my answers would be:

1 - definitely, 2 - it might if the rest of the show were relevant, 3 - can't travel to the show b/c have new baby.

I appreciate any and all feedback this community is willing to share with me. I am *not* collecting names or putting you on some kind of a sales list, this is purely for information purposes.

Thanks!!

BTW thought I'd put info on pricing on it if you were curious:

Like I said though, I'm not passing names along, but you would probably need to know what it would cost to answer some of these:)

(you're allowed to boo, I won't take it personally ).

If you won't take it personally then I will withhold it for someone who will. (Why waste a good heckle?)

No,seriously, I don't watch television but I did just look up Michio Kaku and found him (odd) interesting. So ,yes I would attend (if someone else were paying for it and I had someone to care for my 3 children).

It does make a difference who is speaking. Some people would find it fun to see and listen to someone who could make us enjoy what was being transferred. Most tech speakers are "bland" and "dry" and would put most of us to sleep with long winded speeches where they are just trying to prove to us how much smarter they (think)they are as compared to us while Kaku seems to be a bit easier on the ears.

LOL thanks for the hold on the heckling... I think!

He's a total odd duck, but he is so cool and surprisingly engaging given his field. It was thanks to him that I was able to bust out "String Theory" (correctly!) as the question to a Jeopardy answer in the lunchroom here one day while walking by... our company is about half engineers & tech people, so it was kind of cool for one of the "sales chicks' to actually "know stuff".

Thanks for contributing, I appreciate it!

There could be any number of reasons why I would/would not attend a conference to hear a special speaker. If you wanted to set something up that would get my attention and insure my attendance at any cost, set up a "gab fest" in conjunction with the presentation where I would have the opportunity to personally interact with the lecturer (even at additional cost, this would be the one thing that could get me there). Maybe an "invitation only" cocktail party or breakfast discussion...

That's a good suggestion - I think that is planned but I don't want to speak for them as I am not 100% certain...

Thx for being honest, salesmen suck, but I like to judge people on how they treat me, Globalspec has been good me.

I watch all the science channels/shows that I can, Michio is good but pretty far left, so no I would not go for him as the reason.

I've seen him spin too much cause it was politically expedient. Science is facts and he's not straight up.

That's interesting - I had not noticed that before but I will watch for it myself in the future. And, I'm glad to hear GS has been good to you!

Science may be fact

Science channels/shows are entertainment.

Why do you say Michio is "pretty far left"?

I don't have an opinion, having never seen the man.

My decision of whether or not to go to a conference would be based on many factors, the entertainment value pretty far down the list. The amount the price of attending would be important, hopefully adding entertainment wouldn't raise the price significantly

Garth, I agree with both you and John about putting the conference quality and cost first and the reason I say he is far left is because of some of the opinions he's expressed on CO2, global warming, life in the universe, etc., he is entertaining.

Like Garthh, I've never seen this bloke (or even heard of him!). I also look closely at the bottom line (of the bill) before attending any of these conference things.

It's also very important to me whether it's a conference or just a load of sales pitches (I trust you'll appreciate the difference ).

There's a difference??!!!

Thankfully, this client is a trade show company - that's all they do - so there's no ulterior motive.

I know how you do feel on this though - salespeople (like myself) are the worst to try to sell to b/c at some point in our career we've had some sleazy tactic suggested to us, so we see them coming a mile away and eat other salespeople for breakfast... suppose we're a cannibalistic bunch. We're great to bring with you though when you're buying a car or need something like that though!

I understand salesman are just trying to make some money.

I many times see salespeople as a resource to be exploited.

Salespeople will push all the buttons possible to make that sale, no ill will it's just what they do

*SOME sales reps will do the buttons. In turn, they are the ones who can be exploited. But there are still some good ones out there!

I've never sold anything to anyone in my life that I can not be proud of it genuinely helping them in some fashion, though I sadly admit I'm probably the exception. I enjoy getting the "rule" type as the people helping me because, as you've said and I've experienced too, they can be exploited rather easily too (hence why I love the car buying game). You can practically smell it on them - I call it "quota breath" - and you can make them do nearly anything to get the deal despite themselves!

I actually meant it in a positive way.

Good advice pre sale is part of the total package.

I've had lots of help from (some good) sales reps/sales engineers whatever over the years.

Just sayin' I don't think conference and advertisement are interchangeable terms, and I'd be bloody annoyed if I'd paid to attend a conference & ended up watching an ad!
