stamford generator avr problems

01/08/2010 6:42 PM

I am currently working on a site that has a brand new stamford generator that has yet to be hooked to power when the generator was purchased from the manufacturer it came with the test sheet saying it has been properly load tested and we brought it to site and started it a few times and it worked fine (with no load) then we moved it to its location (on the top of a building ) and we fired it up and blew the avr. We then got a certified generator mechanic to come out to effect repairs. He tested the generator with no avr which brought it up to 40 volts then using a 12 volt battery we brought the current up to 218 volts and we also use a 9 volt and got 170volts all connections where checked including the resistance which was 18 ohms. then we put in the new avr and it worked fine started it stopped it without an issue. the next day fired it up and pop goes the avr and again we rip the thing apart trying to find a problem do all the checks again everything is fine so we decided instead of getting this thing off the roof and shipping it for repairs we would try another avr and it worked on, off, on ,off still no load or hooked to anything then the next day pop goes the avr. Cranes coming to get it off the roof next week anybody that can help before then with a solution. Would have my thanks.

sorry for the bad grammer and a wall of text :)

Hi,

There is a possibility that the exciter windings has an interturn short. The insulation breakdown is not very severe yet, so during the first few times of start stop the leakage current is not big enough to blow the AVR control fuse. But shortly after the winding become warm, the exciter resistance become smaller so the AVR current increase and it will blown the control fuse. Please ask the maintenance engineer to pull out the rotor and check it with winding resistance tester.

regards,

It sounds like a condensed humidity problem.

At the first few startups the AVR, as well as some other components are dry and working fine.

But the next day the humidity condenses on the components in the roof, and deceiving the components on the AVR to burn itself.

Kindest Regards

Maybe something in this link to Stamford will help. Note the caution in the voltage adjustment. http://www.google.com/searchclient=safari&rls=en&q=generator+avr+control&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

The problem is in the modle or AVR. There is a problem with the input voltage of the AVR and the regulated out put voltage of the gen that also is the input voltage of the AVR. The AVR is not properly rated for the gen. there could also be a wrong connection or a manufacturer error in selecting the gens AVR. The exitation voltage of the AVR is much higher causing the gen to voltage in excess.

Chang to another modle of AVR and ur problems will be over.
