HVAC Makeup Water and Condenser Water Flow Rate Savings

01/12/2010 12:16 AM

for a constant range of cooling tower/condenser, hvac make up water & condenser water flow rate demand depend upon compressor power kw/ton as compressor power decreses respectively demand decreses what type of compressor we should select for economical design

manis2k3; how about a valve that changes flow with head pressure or a variable speed compressor. perry

dear sir i m agree with ur suggestion of variable compressor bcoz due to variable heat load, there will be need of a compressor with VFD Control but i m talking about specific power consumption (kw/ton) of compressor. type of compressor (reciprocationg/screw/centrifugal) and which is the best for economical and good design

You can use screw compressor.

It depends on the application such as low temp, high temp or AC, etc. You need to know what the maximum and minimum loads will be. Some compressor designs are better than others for a set application.

Your other main concern will be oil return to the compressor at low demand. The whole system has to be designed with this in mind.

Your compressor options are: rotary, scroll, screw, reciprocating, centrifugal, variable speed, multi speed, multi stage parallel or a combination of the above.

Foy your info, please see recommended items for your review and consideration;

1. Chiller selection:

a. Trane CTV chiller (R123 refrigerant) rated effeciency from 0.45Kw/ton to 0.52 at 87F condenser temp

b. York CTV chilller (R134a refrigerant) rated effeciency from 0.58kw/ton and higher

c. Mcquay chiller(R134a refrigerant) rared effeciency from 0.742 kw/ton and higher -

d. Screw chilller are rated above 0.80kw/ton

e. Receprocating compressor are rated above 1.2KW/ton

2. Other areas that need to achieve subtantial savings are pumps size selection, VFD application consideration and Cooling tower application and optimization.
