Chitosan as a Coagulant in Drinking Water Treatment

01/12/2010 6:37 AM

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience using chitosan as a coagulant for drinking water. I understand it can be used alone or in combination with other coagulants for flocing raw water. I am also looking at alum and other coagulants. I have found a few papers on the net concerning chitosan but not really what I need. Is it readily dissolved in water or does it need to first be dissolve in an acid solution? That is one thing I ran across which is a little confusing.

Is there any particular reason why you want to use chitosan instead of some other more commonly used coagulant? You can simply add it to water, it's especially effective at binding to oil.

I am interested in the science of water treatment. So I am looking at different alternatives so as to get a good comparrison. This may not be the way I want to go. Especially after I work out all of the other sample coagulants I have on the way here. Someone has already been through this before. I am curious as to why some are using chitosan. Possibly it may be an additive in some of the organic polymers available commercially.
