Gas Plant Modification

01/12/2010 7:05 AM

our company is planning a modification for its gas plant. This modification requires some special equipments and requirements that I never faced before. I surfed the internet and I found some good companies, but they are not enough. If you know some companies that have the ability to supply and fabricate all these requirements or even one of these below requirements please advise me.

These requirements are:

1- Hot oil heater system consisting of all components such as heater assembly with heating coil, chimney, refractory lining, burners, ignition system, burner management system.

2. Hot oil skid consisting of all components such as hot oil expansion tank, with insulation, vertical in-line centrifugal pump with mechanical seal, as per API 610, driver motor, mounting pedestal for the pump and motor, coupling guard instrumentation.

3. Gas shell & tube heat exchanger consisting of 4 units.

4. De-ethanizer condenser package consisting of all components such as reflux accumulator with insulation, reflux condenser with insulation, vertical in-line centrifugal pump with mechanical seal as per API, 610, drive motor, mounting pedestal for the pump and motor, coupling guard, instrumentation.

5. Refrigeration system consisting of all components such as compressor with drive motor, economizer, air cooler/condenser, knock-out drum, accumulator/receiver, instrumentation, compressor control, anti-surge controller etc.

I find it doubtful that you will find one "supplier" for all these.

If you want to do business with a single source - you should contact an EPC (Engineering - Procurement - Construction) company who can handle everything, at a premium over what it would cost you to do it yourself.

Where in the world are you?

You could hit up the biggest/best EPC companies because they usually have offices/contacts everywhere - but this job may be too small for them - on the other hand they may welcome the work. But I must repeat they will not be cheap.

For example, but there are many more

I would like to add Foster Wheeler to your list since I did once work for them and these all sound like project engineering areas well within their scope. They also manufacture, or at least used to, Fired Heaters for many such projects. They have offices in Europe and India I believe as well as USA and other areas.

A lot of course depends on your location as to who would be most competitive for the project.

I would look instead for a good HVACR mechanical contractor, perhaps with in-house TEMA, ASME, and UL-508 abilities. The heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and control panels may need to be custom designed, but the other components are pretty much off-the-shelf.

If the Hanford cleanup is any guide, you do not want big "system integrators," who tend also to be good at boondoggle management; i.e., overdesigning, prolonging, and otherwise "milking" the job. Overweening government "helps" this a lot, as well.

Too bad I'm presently working for a different type of concern, with limited shop capabilities, or I would offer to design/bid it myself.

Sounds like you need a small to medium size EPC, a large EPC will have too much overhead to make this small project economical for you. I happen to work for a medium size EPC, we have the capbility, contact me for more information, if you decide to go this route, gcolbert_2000@yahoo.com.
