Hyster B80Z (A233) Electric Pallet Jack

01/14/2010 7:58 AM

This pallet jack indicates 23.8 vdc on the battery terminals. When the key is turned on it indicates full voltage for several seconds and then goes into a fault state. The lower red battery indicator blinks 3 times to every one blink of the above red indicator. The machine does not respond to any commands with the exception of the horn. I assume it is a main contactor but would like some other ideas before I proceed. Perhaps a fuse somewhere?

Thank You, Sal

First if it is a 24 VDC system check the battery with test meter. 23.4 Volts is low. You may have a bad battery or charger. In a fully charged state the battery voltage should be above 24 volts closer to 25 volts. If the pallet truck has a electronic motion controller it maybe faulting on low voltage.

I hooked this battery to another pallet jack and the pallet jack worked perfectly. I then hooked a known good battery to this pallet jack with the same resulting E20 error. Do you know how the shroud surrounding the motors and electronics comes off? There are no visible screws and it appears to pop off however, before I start prying it off with a screw driver it seems safer to ask someone 'in the know'

Thanks, Sal

Been awhile since I worked on pallet truck. Most of the covers had some type of retaining bolt to keep it from bouncing around some didn't. Try lifting straight up most had some type of hook on the inside they engaged or hooked on.

I don't have any knowledge of pallet trucks but i do know batteries and their faults. With the info given it looks pretty certain that you have a high resistance / bad contact somewhere in the main power circuit. I would first look at the battery terminals and links but since you have replaced the battery that seems unlikely. Look at the connections to the speed control unit.

Regards

Chas
