Problem with CAT generator ECM

01/17/2010 9:25 AM

Hi, people. We have three Caterpillar generators model 3456 with ADEM controllers. One of the units was down for about a week due to fan damage.
Problem is the battery went down due to the cold weather (-20deg C) and lack of trickle charger. When we finally got ready to run with fully charged battery, the generator set controller shows it cannot communicate with the Engine control module and/ or cannot update from ECM. As soon as the battery is connected, during boot-up it shows zero values on all fields before registering the communications error.
Anybody experienced this before? Should I be worried about the program or just focus on the wiring?
Thanks.

jinyongesa; did you disconnect the battery when recharged it? you may have ruined the controller if you were trying to jump a dead battery. herry

Yes, Herry. The batteries are charged away from the generator area. Would the dying battery actually damage the controller? At the time it was discovered that the battery was dying, there was some clicking sounds, probably from the Electronic unit injectors as it seemed to originate from the cylinder head area, though the engine was in stop status. I am told last winter this set had similar problems updating lube oil pressure values. Nothing was done but it just sort of healed by itself. Strange beast.

Batter you focus more on wiring as ADEM based CAT has habit of irrating stating after long shutdown. Switch off all DC supply and power it up in "sequence". I am facing this problem every now and than on my CAT G3520C.

I do not understand the sequence as there is no hyperlink to your underline. We have a spare similar engine. We checked the wiring found all okay. We swapped the ECMs and found my ECM to be defective. Probably the battery voltage decaying interfered with something inside. The dealers will tell us.

Thanks alot, people.
