Bredel Pump

01/18/2010 9:35 PM

Anyone whose familiar with bredel pumps? What is that cylinder that is usually installed on it's discharge pipeline? We're about to install our spare underflow pump for our base metal thickener.. We don't know the specifications of that cylinder.. Will it affect if we install the pump without that?

Difficult to guess from your description, but if I had to hazard a guess it would be that it is an inline non return valve. Should be very easy to look at it and see. If this is what it is then it should be installed if there is any chance of backflow if something goes wrong with the pump - burst hose for example.

Maybe it is.. Prof, it's like a muffler about a meter long and 6' OD.. It has a relief or rather a breather on it's top.

Your physical description does not sound like an NRV. It sounds more like a pulsation dampener. Is it a metal sleeve with a hose on the inside?

It maybe an accumulator which is a storage device. The accumulator maybe being used to remove high frequency pressure surges caused by the pump. This is to protect the lines and equipment from the stresses of these quick changes in pressure.
