Text Search in SolidEdge Draft Files

01/19/2010 7:48 AM

Hello Mechites,

I am working as a design engineer. And am fresh to the field. We make electrical connectors.

In our company, we have drawings muddled up from all those decades. So I proposed a plan to standardize the process. I also wanted to create a component database where all component drawings are indexed into folders like 'Screws', 'Washers', 'Bus Bars' etc. for ready reference.

But all this exercise will need a text search engine which will help sort out the needed drawings from the mess. I found desktop search good enough for AutoCAD DWG files. There is also a software called 'Docupoint', I googled it.

But I cannot find a way to search text inside SolidEdge draft .DFT files, without opening them. I will hugely glad to anyone who can help me out as it will reduce our workload in measures of tons.

Thank You

Talaus

Since dft files are proprietary binary format, you're probably going to have to do this task in 2 steps. 1) Convert the file to dwg or dxf. 2) Search for the text.

There are some good (free and must pay) converters HERE

Or you could use a free hex editor like NEO to wade through the files.

I am using for best results not only a file of any type but also any word or phrase i a text, .html, .rtf and more with quite a good performance.

try it:

baregrep.exe

Have a fine day
