01/19/2010 10:22 PM

Cable insulations are:

XLPE - Cross-Linked Polyethylene
XLPO - Cross-Linked Polyolefin

Why is it called Cross-Linked?

Un crosslinked polyolefins (polyethylene is a polyolefin, so is polypropylene) are like very dense wax. The polymer chains are free to slide and pass over each other with relative ease.

Crosslinking hooks molecules from one chain to another thus increasing the durability of the material.

You are "linking" one polymer chain to another.

It's late, check wiki.
