Chromium-Plated Steel

01/19/2010 4:25 PM

I often use chrome plated steel in creating junk sculptures. Items such as chrome wheel nuts, old sockets, chrome-vanadium spanners etc. I would like to know if the fumes from welding such items can be hazardous. I don't normally wear a respirator for ordinary steel welding (perhaps I should) but are the gases produced by chromium welding prticularly harmful?

You should wear a respirator!

Yes, yes, and double yes. The problem you have to watch for is ionizing the chromium to hexavalent chromium (Cr-VI). You run into this not only in chrome, but in stainless steel. Cr-VI is a listed cause of lung cancer.

But, you ought to think about a respirator if you're doing much junk welding anyway. Lung cancer only kills you, but manganese fumes can cause erectile dysfunction - now that's serious!

Thank you. The purchase of a respirator is imminent.

You may find that those raging headaches go away when you weld.

Yes. Wear a respirator and keep the area well-ventilated, even in Antarctic conditions.
