Pipe and Casing

01/20/2010 3:22 PM

Steel Column Pipes is specified to be of 8", API J55, SCH80. Threaded 8 round long, the column pipes will be used inside deep water wells with a submersible pumps. After contacting some of the pipes manufacturers they stated that all tubes fabricated as per API J55, are used as pipes if the size is less than 4", and used as casing if the size is more that 4". this raised up the issue of the difference between PIPES and Casing , so my concern is that if we can use the casing as a pipe , more specifically , if we can use API J55 8" that is considered as casing to use it as Column pipes ??

You may want to visit roscoemoss at

www.roscoemoss.com/tech_manuals/gwwc/gwwc.pdf

for a complete overview of well casing and piping.

Well casing is regulated so you may also want to visit the local regulator's site or office before installing. If you are a well driller in North America I would suggest talking to the National ground water Ass. at:

www.ngwa.org/agwse.

Well casing must be able to withstand hydrostatic pressures and corrosion that may be present. The annular space (the space between the well casing and the original bore hole) is usually 1 inches greater radius than the pipe and must be sealed with an impervious grout. This seal is usually cement or bentonite or a combination of both. Again this is regulated and local drillers should be fully aware of the minimum requirements.

Hope this helps.
