If you want to really know.. I think all areas in electrical engineering that needs calculation can matlab be applied.. It can even simulate transient stability analysis.. load flow as well as short circuit calculations.

you can even create your own software if you like.. it just requires a little programming and that's all..

it can even be used in designing algorithms or even micro controllers....
