Exhaust System Pressure

01/21/2010 1:14 PM

What is the average pressure in the exhaust system of a car after it has passed through the turbocharger?

I don't know about turbocharged systems, but 2-3 PSI at low speed and 4-10 PSI at high speed, depending on a bazillion variables.

Generally, I'd think a turbo'd be about the same.

There might be a slight loss across the turbine and further losses from that point to the tail pipe.

Without a turbine there will also be losses, but slightly less.

Which car?

Which turbo?

Etc?

Etc?

Etc?

Where would you like us to measure the EGP??

Or would you prefer that we give you a profile along the entire system?

I want to know about a normal car. I need to know the range actually with or without the turbocharger.

The goal is 0. And that should be at WOT, max RPM. Anything above that is hurting the efficiency of the system. Do you remember the Corvair? When Chevrolet married a turbo to that little engine they developed the lowest back pressure muffler the US had ever seen. 145 cubic inches and a 2.5" inlet and outlet. Chrysler spent a fortune to put the 1964 race designed 426 Hemi into passenger cars, and they would run better with the Corvair turbo mufflers on them. What are you trying to do?
