Routine Change on Mechanical Assets

01/22/2010 4:09 AM

In our company maintenance standard it is required to Routine Change our assets for every 10 years of service. Is this really necessary for routine changing when all assets are regularly maintained (Preventive Maintenance)? Why do we have to routine change or what are the main reasons of routine change? Fellow maintenance and desisgn engineers can we suggest otherwise?

Accuracy.

Technology (10 years is quite a long time for the technology to jump a few generation)

I have seen 5 years for a preciosion engineering firm- our vendor- (of course they move the machines after this time to Rough machining zone and sell after 10-12 years). Finish machining is on a machine <5 years old. And this firm may be one of the or may be the best in world in its product.

What are the assets?? Pumps in acid service might well need such a routine change. Compressors in refrig service might well run for 50 years.

I worked with some recip air compressors once that had been in service since 1890, this was about 1990, and as far as I know they are still running now...

One other obvious variable is your maintenance program. How would you rate it personally. Be honest! What about duty cycles. Are you a 24/7 operation. Factor downtime as well as stops and starts. Cold iron to hot run again and again can be a killer. And, as mentioned before, is your product caustic in terms of machinery wear? A blanket 10 year policy may be inappropriate for all departments. Examine them individually.
