Heating Fatty Acids in Tanks

01/22/2010 9:40 AM

We receive Rice bran fatty acids transported in oil tankers. The melting point of the fatty acid is around 45c. Presently coil connected to live steam at 40psig using hoses is used (pushed in the tanker from top manhole)

We have many times failures in hoses ,also the time taken for heating is more than hour.

Please suggest better method/arrangement to reduce heating time & failures. We have to use steam only.

The steam temperature and pressure for this should be moderate, and well within the capability of a steam hose. But is your hose coming into contact with the fatty acid? If so, you may need to research a hose material that can handle the fatty acid as well as the steam.

For faster melting of the fatty acid, you would need either higher steam temperature/ pressure (with suitable controls) or a coil with larger surface area. Higher steam temperature may produce localized overheating of the fatty acid, but I don't know if that would really be a problem. If so, you may need to enlarge the coil.
