Higher Nb content in SA516 Gr.70N

01/23/2010 11:50 PM

As per ASME spec., Nb content shall be maximum 0.02% but up to 0.05% if purchaser and manufacturer agreed. What is the effect of Nb content between 0.02% and 0.05% and higher than 0.05%?

The detrimental effect of increasing Nb will be lower toughness (Charpy V-notch); which is more of a concern than the very small increase in strength that the extra Nb would bring.

If in doubt - specify impact testing requirements.
