LG 60" plasma HDMI/Sky fault

01/24/2010 10:43 AM

We have an 18 month old of the above and have been beset by installation problems. Sky plus was initially installed incorrectly,no hdmi to the TV (no LNB splitter on the first visit) then correctly, then the sky box was faulty, then the HDMi board was changed for a new one on the television as this was deemed faulty. Having previously checked the leads,we now have a situation where the sky engineer says that the box is fine and has output and the LG engineer is blaming the Sky engineer. Are there any known faults with LG TV or do I shoot myself now?

It common for each supplier to blame the other.

My girlfriend was hooked up to the internet with roadrunner. And could not access the internet. Provider said its the computer, Computer said its the connection box with the provider. And some said it was the virus protection software.

The provider would say they are able to run (remotely) dianostics on the box and the box is fine after almost (2) months of paying for internet and actually having no internet, she was able to convince the provider to send out a new box for her to try. And low and behold she was able to get connected.

Don't shoot yourself, be persist. Good luck

And it helps if your wife/girlfriend can be a bit#H. But make use of it and make sure shes pointed in the right direction when she goes off for maximum effect.

Hi Martin,

Can you get hold of another TV with a HDMI input; which is known to be working; to test to see if your actually getting an output from the SKY box. Try a little fault finding yourself, so that you can be better informed and, stop these so called engineers from pulling the wool over your eyes. Or even try another HDMI output source (i.e. xbox360, DVD/Blueray player) to test the TV out. All the best.

Martin, We have an 32" LG and it has been a very nice and reliable TV. As far as I could find there are no major issues with the HDMI board on LG tv's. Your problem must have been one of the unlucky few. My thoughts would an issue with Sky. I would have them come out and prove to me their box is actually working. Had a simliar issue with Dish Network. Turned out to be the converter which they said was outputting but, as proved when I had them come out to check, their converter was indeed bad.

I've used LG products for many years and have yet to find a problem. I have talked with many installers and they report the same feedback. Please forgive me if I ask some obvious questions:

  1. There are at least 3 HDMI inputs to your set; do none of them function correctly?
  2. Are you sure you are selecting the correct relevant HDMI input?
  3. You must have other HDMI sources (DVD, Blu-ray, PS3 etc) can we assume these work correctly on all inputs?
  4. If you haven't get a lend of one and try it out. If the inputs work with another unit, the inputs are fine as HDMI is a strictly set standard.
  5. Will the Sky box work with another HDMI TV?
  6. Drum roll.....now the big one
  7. Have you tried another HDMI cable? You may have been conned into buying a Monster-type for mega-quids and reluctant to buy another. This is a digital cable, you only need an electrical connection, coat-hangers will work (I have done this to prove a point). Buy a 10 quid cable and try it.
  8. You may have an earthing problem. Get an electrician to check your power socket earth(-s). Are your appliances all plugged into the same socket or plugboard?
  9. Given the history of Pace devices (who make Sky boxes) I suspect the box. Book a Sky installer to come out but make sure its the morning. They do about 4 installs a day so they will have spare boxes in the van if you catch them in the morning. Insist they try another box out (even have some folding stuff handy if necessary).
  10. If it is the box, take Sky to the small claims court for a rebate on your subscription. They are under instructions to avoid such claims you will not get money but you will get some free subscription.
  11. If you can't get through to Sky go through the options for a new subscription or upgrade. You will get through immediately. Then insist you get transferred.
  12. If you don't get satisfaction insist you terminate your subscription. Sky's advert revenue rate is based on the numbers of subscribers connected. They will do anything to keep you connected, but only if they know you are serious. Be pushy. The operators are trained to go through various customer scenarios, they sit with a customer flowchart and simply turn to the relevant page according to your response. Try to gauge their skill; if the operator sounds young and inexperienced, hang up and try again. You want an experienced operator who knows how to react and placate a pushy customer.

Let us know how you get on.
