Welding and Pressure Vessel Fabrication

What are the different type of welding positions as per code in fabrication manufacturing for pressure vessels ?what are the important factors to be taken care while conducting a welder qualification test for various welding positions in fabrication manufacturing?

The attached drawing sketch indicates the different welding positions (Flat, Horizontal, Vertical & Overhead) as per AWS and ASME codes for both Fillet (F) and Groove/Butt (G) welds for both Sheet and Pipe works.

• For welder qualification, it is mandatory to proceed the qualification test at position 6G to allow welding in any other position. Since position 6G allow to weld in positions 5G, 4G, 3G, ... etc., while position 2G is only allow to weld in positions 2G and 1G only, and so on.

• While when we need to do PQR, we prefer to do the procedure qualification welds in position 1G to insure good weldment.
