hi

il will be performing an survey in our plant. I will be survey all the electronic equipment and checking whether it is protected adequatly against lightening, faults etc. need to check whether earthing is properly done.and whether surge arrestors are installed on sensitive equipment. also going to check whether the electronic equipment is affecting our qos.

Two Three Four things:

1. Where are you?

2. Do you mean electronic equipment or electrical equipment, or both?

3. Why would your plant assign someone with no experience to do this survey, since it involves deadly consequences if not performed properly?

4. What the hell is a qos?

Lightning and fault protection requires a detailed study and knowledge in numerous specialist areas (even for a basic analysis). Unless you are an inexperienced electrical engineer you are not going to have the necessary background training to even begin (there are limits to what an open engineering forum can offer).

As for the other electrical aspects you likely don't need to be an electrician but you at least need to be knowledgeable of the local electrical standards and regulations applicable to the equipment and plant and your country (and state).

Is "qos" power quality?

You really need to provide more information about your qualifications and plant. Also what's the purpose of the survey? What equipment do you have? What is qos?

hi

i am an electrical engineer(heavy current) but with only limited number of months of experience. i think my boss gave me the project so that i could learn on the job.good experience for me.

qos is quality of supply.

purpose of the survey is that we have installed expensive electronic equipment around our plant.plc,ac & dc drives etc. Must enure that it is adequately protected against lightening and faults.

i do have some one who will be assisting me. i just wanted some basic things i should look out.

The first thing you should do is check the power quality of your plant, such as the voltage waveform voltage drop under load and harmonics (especially if a lot of variable speed drives have been installed). An oscilloscope and harmonic analyser would be very handy for this. From there you can get an idea of just how much additional protection is needed on top of the standard protection built into the variable speed drives.

As for fault protection this really only relates to the cabling and bus work connected to the equipment and is handled by the circuit protection (fuses, circuit breakers, etc) as well as the earthing.

An interesting project. Try a search of CR4 and the internet for more information.
