Arc Flash Study with ETAP 6.0

01/29/2010 5:01 PM

I am trying to do an arc flash study using ETAP v 6.0.00. I have a one-line diagram but I am confused on what to represent as loads..basically how to change that one-line into a one-line on etap to do the simulation. Not all the ends of the lines have motor loads.. Many of them are panels or hvac systems.

Is there a website that can explain this more?

I have read a bunch up on arc-flash and arc-flash studies. However, I am stuck at this point in converting it to a one-line in ETAP

An arc flash study should only be performed by experienced and qualified electrical engineers familiar with power quality, short circuit studies.Arc flash study that consists of short-cir- cuit analysis, protective device coordination, and arc flash analysis for meeting OSHA and. NFPA 70E compliance.Arc flash study, calculations and analysis tailored to meet client-specific requirements and timescales.

ETAP, SKM Power Tools, ESA Easy-power, these are all great packages for modeling electrical systems. I personally use ESA. It sounds like your not ready to start drawings anything yet. There are a few steps to consider before building a one line model in any of these packages. You need to understand short circuit and arc flash analysis a little bit. Read up on NFPA 70, IEEE 1584 or IEC standards that will work under, and do some manual calculations. You need to go find all the data you can get for the specific Transformers, Motors, Switchgear, Breakers, Fuses, Protective Relays, Conductors and Raceways and bulk loads (panels) on your electrical system. Build you one-line and run the models, Normal, Startup, Best case, Worst Case and any other case you can think of. Get a competent peer review before you complete the project.
