Pressure Refueling

02/02/2010 2:54 AM

hi friend,

could you help me out how to analyse the effect of venting system on fuel transfer while doing pressure refueling in aircraft?Means how the improper venting leads to increased time for refueling?how to analyse this fuel and air interaction dynamically?& how to arrive the max pressure built up in fuel tank becoz of improper venting??

Improper venting can lead to catastrophic failure. I was a fuel system operator in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years, I operated the equipment the put the fuel on the aircraft. There was a powerpoint we were shown about an Air Force C-141 that had tanks sealed for maintenance. When fuel was supplied to the sealed tanks they ruptured; when the tank ruptured it destroyed the integrity of the wing which collapsed by separating at the fuselage. You can read about and see images of the incident here.

In short, if you cannot ensure adequate ventilation do not refuel the air craft. If you can only account for slow venting, reduce the pressure of your refuel equipment. For safety reasons, all U.S. Air Force refueling equipment is standardized at 50 plus or minus 5 PSI of pressure. We reduce this by lowering the rpm's of the pump for lower pressure refueling aircraft.

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions, I can help with Fuel storage, issue and transfer equipment. Also I know about liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen storage. There are many others here who can help with just about anything else.

The link merely shows what can go wrong with inadequate venting during fuel transfer.
