Uses for a Broken LCD TV?

02/02/2010 9:55 AM

OK, I didn't kill the dog but came very close when she pushed the nearly new 37" LCD TV off the stand...broke the screen very nicely where it hit the corner of the table it was on. (Tell me dogs can't see TV! She attacks when any dog is on!)

Sooo - what use can I make of this fine TV that has a hole in the lower left hand corner of the screen?

Make a fine door for the crate you need to build to put the dog in while you watch TV.

It would make good body armour...they certainly stop crossbow bolts very effectively.

Buy your buddy the cabinetmaker (everyones got one) a case of beer. Have him make a frame with legs to fit the TV laying on it's back. Fill the screen area with 1/8" of polyurethane and let cure. Hook up the power and cable again. Slave the channels to the NEW TV you're about to buy. Now you're the only guy on the block with a surround sound card table.

Bummer, tack a large photo of another dog to the broken screen an hang up in the dog's area.

Checkout a screen protector for next time

Nice screen protector, probably wouldn't protect the screen from cracking to due to a fall impact (as I believe was the case here, if I read correctly)

They should probably install inertial dampers to prevent breakage on such TV's. If only Star Trek was real...

It is amazing to me that they aren't built with better protection for the only critical component of a TV, the screen. Of course with an ignorant consumer base and a laissez-faire government it's not really that surprising that manufacturers would allow themselves the opportunity for rapid turn-around repeat business.

IF I lost a new 37" LCD to the dog I would have lost at least one or more 22 shells and a dog to ballance everything out.

Then went shopping for a new TV minus the new dog. But I likely would have picked up a new box of shells just in case someone trys to give me a new dog to replace the old one.

A screw driver and a couple screws to properly anchor the TV to the wall or stand would be much cheaper and not incurr the wrath of the local authorities. might even keep your worthless ass out of jail...

Where I live its completely legal to shoot a nuisance animal or animal with any assumed or questionable health problem or threat where I live.

The nuisance animal laws are why the self riotous pinheads keep their pets trained to stay home being the neighbors have the full right drop them the instant they set foot on the property if they have ever given any reason to be seen as a nuisance or perceived possible health threat! Its also why it completely legal to take a pet out and shoot it for any reason as well.

Go ahead and call the authorities. Fido "brought home a dead skunk" and I was suspicious of him having rabies now. The TV was just a coincidence.

See you in court. I grantee you have far more to loose in this pursuit than me!

I have a 14 year old border collie that loves dogs, cats, horses and squirrels on TV.

But she takes a toy to the 55 inch TV to play with the animal. She knows all the commercials with an animal in it. She has never broken any furniture, but wagging her tail has dusted furniture and knocked off a few small things

Perhaps your next TV needs to be behind a fence

Or you can sell the dog and use the monry to buy a new TV

Re: Uses for a Broken LCD TV?

Bummer Dude Man about the LCD TV getting trashed!!!! Short of cutting the pooch's throat, you could always take a decent pic of your dog, then enlarge and paste it onto the TV screen........use it for target practice in the backyard or at the local Range with Del's crossbow or better yet, a H&K MP5!!!! LOL

If it makes you feel any better, my 5 Border Collies and Welsh Pembrooke Corgi all watch the critters on our 47-inch LCD/HD TV all the time......and sometimes they get so riled-up quite a bit + jumping up and down when they see a pussy or squirrel on the TV to the point where I can't even hear the cranked up BOSE theater sound system! When they get into that sort of mindset they become too wild and bark like mad.....and that's when I pull out the hopped-up AIRSOFT handgun and pop a few plastic 6mm BB's into the manic crowd! Wowsers, it works great as they'll scatter throughout the house to go find a safe hiding place!!!!! Sudden QUIETNESS! Usually I only have to slide back the upper receiver and the noise that that action makes has them become good little doggies that'll make them obey like nothing else in this world. Good thing the dogs usually behave, otherwise I'd be forced to pull out my electrically powered AIRSOFT M4A2 Assault Rifle that can shoot lots of them white plastic BBs in no time flat @ 850 fps muzzle velocity!!!!!! ***LMAO***

May I suggest that you mount your replacement wide screen TV HIGH up on the wall above an entertainment center where the jumping pooch can't reach it? That's what we had to do here!!!

Have a great sunny day!

The usual old answer- tie a rope around the thing & use as boat anchor!. I have no time for the so-called better technology tv,s - just ain't true- lucky if last 3-5 years- use 3 times power of crt-& that 16/9 flat screen! My 1989 Philips 26" crt has a FAR better pic - better colour- it is worth watching!. Before you denounce me as not knowing what I am talking about- I am a professional electr onics repairer incl tv. with 30 plus years of experience.

Yeah, there's a lot of 'the Emerors new clothes' effect with this modern technology...
Like "digital TV will be more noise immune"...yeah right..the picture just freezes for 10 seconds or goes pixelated, whereas a little noise on an analogue system would still let you see what was going on.

And as for digital audio... nuff said.

They've done HDTV tests....two identical systems (both standard Lo Def) but they tell the folks that one system is HD... When asked to rate picture quality the one labeled HD comes out on top...(So I've stuck HD labels on everything in my house)

Re: Uses for a Broken LCD TV?

I agree about these new TV's. I have a ten year old 36" Sony Trinitron that I love, and it only weights 200#. It has a beautiful picture, and I have not interest in shelling out 1000 bucks for a TV that I just don't think will last. But the tuner is failing on it. All that is working is one S-Video and the component. All the others are toast. Can I find a new tuner for it? It doesn't look to hard to replace but I have no idea where to get parts. Do you have any suggestions?

You should first check and or resolder the connections as this was an issue with those

Yes tuners fail quite often on tv,s- it is easy to r/p the tuner- but 1st you need a good tuner(same pinout) to solder in- could be different make as long as same format - need desoldering tool & soldering iron. Before changing measure voltages on each pin to confirm tuner faulty- if can't be bothered with this- chnge anyway- has often proved to be prob- be aware though that prob could be anywhere further down track- look at this as 1st step.

You can buy a tuner with an S-video or component output, assuming the audio inputs work or that you also have a sound system you can dump the audio into.

Re: Uses for a Broken LCD TV?

Thanks for the ideas on the TV. The dog stays! She's a breeding female that earns her keep. It was an accident! We have multiple dogs that get trained in the house before they are sold...this broken TV will now be one of the training tools I can use to ensure all the dogs behave around it properly. The answer is NOT to get rid of the dog but to train the dog. Too many people blame bad behavior on the dog...it's the owner that's responsible for the dogs behavior.

Thanks again, not what I expected for a solution but then CR4 is always coming up with new and interesting information to work with.

ps. The new BIGGER LCD TV will be mounted higher and more securely than the old one!

I guess no post is off topic here, but you may be able to recycle a few parts. Can the power supply find a use on a work bench? How about the back lights and inverter, under counter lighting? (Caution, high voltage.) If the front frame is good, could it become a picture frame? If you buy another, same exact model, you have boards, etc. for easy repair. I've seen some artwork, and even clothing made from pc boards. Is there a school which has an electronics course you could donate it to?

Cast it in concrete, it would make a good anchor.

I recently bought an Epson 8500UB Projector for my wife's b'day present (140" home theater). You can project on a white wall and not worry about Fido knocking the projector off the ceiling!

Cheers

Vince

If you still have the receipt for the TV, it is still under warranty and you bought it using a credit card, you might try investigating to see if TV can be replaced under the loss, damage or stolen clause based under the terms of your credit card. Long time ago, our cat chewed though my wife's nice woolen sweater, I called VISA and since I was fortunate enough to have the right clauses associated with my card, I received a refund for the sweater ! Give it a try !

List the electronics on line.Include model number, serial number, etc.

Someone may be looking for a mother board, etc.A chance to recoupe some of your loss.Or perhaps you could buy a 37 inch LCD display for replacement.

I really like the table idea if it still works! You could cover the hole in the corner with a coaster of your favorite beer brand and cast it right into the table! Beer advertising at it's best.

Also, the idea of a training aid for the dogs is certainly sound, but it is sort of an expensive frisbee, isn't it?

Also - Del's idea of shooting it with a crossbow is kind of interesting... You could slave it off the new TV with the outdoor channel tuned in and you would have your own Indoor (outdoor might be better) video archery range! My son wants one like the local archery shop, but he was much discouraged by the $40,000 price tag... This one might not last nearly as long, but it would be considerably cheaper.

Please post a GA for this one - I just saved you $39,000!

Frame around the perimeter to reduce screen size to within the undamaged portion. Then adjust zoom factor to accommodate you new dimensions. Of course, you may have to look at it using only one eye.

Then video tape your dog and play it in continuous loop mode on the screen.Limit his movement to a few centimeters from contact with the screen. Eventually, he will realize that he cannot reach the screen. After about 3 weeks, you can take him off of the leash. He will not touch the TV.He will come close, but not quite touch it.

(See: How to train a flea circus).
