Genset Controllers

02/02/2010 8:46 PM

Dear Engineers,

I am surfing through in this forum for more infor on the genest controllers notably those digital types rather than the conventional types with synchro scope but couldn't find them so i have decided to start this discussion.

I understand in the market there are couple of brands like : Deepsea, CompAac , Deif etc. But what is the difference in this models besides price.

All of them seem to have the same capability and usage. Nowadays more genset are using these types of controllers. But they do cause disadvantages like metering problem with the analog amp, volt KWH meters. And some engineers/consultants still prefer to use conventional type.

So hope we can have some discussion on these engineering issues on these controllers. Thanks.

Different brands ensure you different guarantees. Better choose a realiable one and save you from bothering its quality and performance. Here are a lots of options: http://www.ecvv.com/product_directory/Genset.html Keep your demand in mind, and apply it to the capability and usage when you choose your item.

Dear Forum member,

I am sorry , I am unable to spell your name. There has been lot of technical advances in DG set and genset controller industries. I am presently in Bangalore and lot of infrastructure has come up where the client installs a DG set of .. say..may be equal KVA rating as the transformer rating.

Primarily , it has to be decided what synchronising logic you need from the DG set, what types of protections are required, what type of electrical parameters need to be recorded.

I will give you some options where i have worked on :

1) load sensing, load dependent start stop, automatic load sharing of DG sets with engine parameters and faults annunciation with a additional feature of SCADA system where the DG set can be operated from remote place, with additional feature of manual synchronisation where double voltmeter, double frequency meter, synchroscope and check synchronising relay is used for manual synchronisation.

In the above case, genset controllers of makes mentioned above in addition to woodward make can be used in conjunction with PLC for closing & tripping of breaker and load sharing purpose. The genset manufacturers will have a technical catalog of their product features. Now a days genset controllers will have metering and protection feature in addition to control features.

You may also need to know whether the DG set is ASYNCHRONOUS or ISOCHRONOUS. Please be careful in isochronous case since the DG set will not have load sharing feature and KW and KVAR sharing may not be possible.

Now with you doubt, Some engineers still prefer conventional analog systems. then this option can be provided along with digital system. if the engineer wants to manually synchronise the DG sets, then electromechanical protection relays and analog meters can be additionally provided for each DG set. This may be because electromechanical systems are more robust and does not have nuisance tripping for transients.

So dear forum member, if the customer needs conventional system, please serve him,

conventional system can be used in conjunction with digital systems.
