How to Upload a PDF to the Web

02/03/2010 1:58 PM

I have a 322 megabyte PDF file of some of my previous work, including doctoral dissertations, patents and research reports, and seek a simple and inexpensive way to make it freely available on the web, being the author alone.

Either, some free websites accept texts, but of limited length (1 to 5 megabytes), and only html texts can be tranfered.I have found a word to html converter, but it may not function with Word 97, Word 2000, and the operating systems WINDOWS 2000 and VISTA PREMIUM.

Have you any suggestion?

I would be very grateful to simply have an adress where to upload my 322 MB PDF file.

Thanks for your repply.

The Opera browser, version 10 has a feature called Unite where you can host the content yourself. Depending on your upload speed it might take a long time to get 322 MB out though.

Adding some details about the content of the work might be helpful. You might not get many suggestions with "I want someone to host 322 MB of my stuff for free". But, if the readers are excited about the content then you might have several suggestions/offers.

http://www.scribd.com/

Its full of similar content. You can upload up to 100MB-sized files onto Scribd (so you would need to break your single PDF into 4 of more parts) but it is free (I believe), with the option of read only viewing or PDF, PPT or TXT download formats.

4Shared http://www.4shared.com/uploader/ is a good site for free "Upload" and "Download" up to 100 MB.

I used 4shared free service recently to host a file & it worked OK but I didn't notice until after signing up that they will delete all of your files if you don't log in every 30 days.

The first thing is to be realistic about this project. No potential reader is going to want all of it, and very few are going to bother to download a file of that size to pick out the nuggets. I suggest you start by breaking down the files into subject-based chunks, with the doctoral work separate from the patents, and so on. You then spend some time cross-indexing these chunks, using plenty of hyperlinks. When you upload the much smaller individual files, you accompany them with a master index, again with plenty of hyperlinks to individual sections of individual files. There is no particular need then to convert to HTML format, and there are plenty of sites which will host that small collection for free.

Google docs is limited to, I think, 2Mb per file, Keep & Share is better but still limited to 10Mb.

Does Office Live accept PDFs? I thought it was only for Office documents.

As mentioned, break it up into manageable chunks, organize it logically and provide hyperlinks from an index pdf.

There's no way I would wait for a 322 Mb pdf to download to my computer before the Acrobat reader would even allow it to be displayed.

Have pity for those of us on the download end.

I think you're going to have to host your own web page. I've downloaded PDF form catalogs that are close to 1 gig in size for sprockets and gear motors but they came from sites that were hosted by NORD, Martin and MCMaster-Carr. Those sites hosted by others are limited because they want to have room for others to use their site too.

I agree. Your ISP probably offers a low cost web hosting package with webpage templates.

If your audience is limited and you don't want or need to create webpages you could subscribe to Apple's Mobile Me service at $99/year for 40GB. Available for Windows OSs at: www.apple.com/mobileme/ You install the Windows Control panel and you can either share docs and pics directly from your PC or via a Public Directory [called a folder in the Apple world] on an iDisk, which is a dedicated partition on Apple's servers.

Unfortunately the Windows version does not include iWeb the Apple web authoring applications with great templates. I have created multipage websites for friends in less than 30 minutes using that application.

try www.ahashare.com

they upload movies (legal or not) and books with several GB size. They have upload teams and support. Not sure if this is what you need but free as far as I know.

The magic word is "File Hosting". Do a search on any engine and you will get hundreds of sites that impose different terms of use. But be carefull most of them are intended to be used or are being used to distribute adult material. Rapidshare & depositefiles are some examples.

anitoff,

Please visit Google's sites/docs/spreadsheets. You can store your documents online, publish them to your website, collaborate, etc. all free. Just break down that 322MB monster PDF file into manageable sub files, and all should be good to upload.

If you would like an invitation into Google, you are welcome to one of mine.
