Fault Level Current

Hi guys

On our Plant we have two transformers (22kv/525v;delta/star) supplying the MCC's in the substation, each transformer supply different section/panels and they are equipt with a bus coupler in between in case when one fails we can switch over to another one.

My question is:As far as the fault level current is concern, what will happen if i parrallel this two transformers for few min. (e.g 2min) and what's the danger involved.

I search on previous discussion on CR4 but i didnt get the specific answer.

Your fault current will be approximately double in value. The danger is if the fault occurs during that 2 minutes you equipment is toast if it is not rated for the max fault condition.

The fault level will be double the current supplied by individual transformers. If your protection system is not adequate and the MCC is not designed for this fault level, it can lead to major breakdown of the system.

It has to be verified whether adequate protections are in line before such an attempt.

simple; you can do but it is a calculated risk. During paralleling, fault should not occur. Normally only momentary paralleling is allowed.

Its simple. When you parallel two transformer and if the fault occur, the switchboard will be subjected to double the fault current. The switchboard fault withstand is defined as 1 sec rating basis. It is not advisable. But still we do the momentary paralleling i.e. paralleling through interlock; which is like instantaneous operation. There is a calculated risk in paralleling the two transformers for 2 min. Nothing will happen if there is no fault during parlleling. Operating persons do take this kind of risk when a large rated motor to be started.

Dear Friend,

Synch. of two or more transforments needs to check and fulfilling of synch. conditions, without which there will be danger of mixing two souces of different sources roughly.
