What is the difference between An OFF Load & ON Load Tap changing In a HV Transformer (Rating 1600KVA) & which one is better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tap_(transformer)
Off-Load Tap Changer: To operate this type of tap changer, the transformer has to be de-energized.
On-Load Tap Changer: The tap changer can be operated with transformer keeping energized.
The Off-Load Tap Changer is simpler and less expensive than the On-Load one but the service continuity is not maintained during the tap change.
If the system voltage fluctuates very often and the service continuity is important, the ON-Load should be the choice of selection.
